Considerations
- Biotech VC (focus on therapeutics/drugs) is becoming increasingly difficult without a PhD.
- You can, with massive effort get into biotech VC without a PhDā¦ just remember that you are highly likely to be ineligible for the majority of credible funds (even after 5+ years of experience)
- You absolutely need a relevant bachelor's degree with a strong life science focus (Biology, Natural sciences etc)
- VC is competitive. Most roles receive a huge number of applications and itās an easy decision to filter for elite universities and PhDs (Iām now seeing post docs)
- You really should be making an effort to build your extracurriculars
- This assumes youāll be going for an analyst/associate entry role
- I haven't met many people who have got into VC via the āoperational roleā pathway. This seems to be more of a US based thing.
PhD Routes
- Classic approach: BSc > PhD > VC Fellowship/internship > VC role
- + banking BSc > PhD > 2-3 yrs M&A HC banking > VC Fellowship/internship > VC role
- + consulting BSc > PhD > 2-3 yrs MBB LS consulting > VC Fellowship/internship > VC role
ā¦ Sometimes you can get lucky and skip the PhD and/or internship
